Cloud of the Unknowing

June 6, 2012

I am reading The Cloud of the Unknowing for my last class for my Spiritual Direction Program.  There are so many incredible pieces of wisdom and insight in this book.  I thought I would share a few over the next few posts.

Early in the book, the author of the Cloud of the Unknowing, captures the amazing gift of God’s invitation to be close to him:

And so, with exquisite kindness, he awakened desire within you, and binding it fast with the leash of love’s longing, drew you closer to himself

How incredible is it that God with “exquisite kindness” awakens within us a desire for God?  We do not have to do anything other than exist for this invitation to be there, to be drawn closely to God.

The question is– will we answer this invitation to be close to God?

Becky is an Ignatian-trained spiritual director, retreat facilitator, and writer. She is the author of the Busy Lives and Restless Souls (March 2017, Loyola Press) and The Inner Chapel (April 2020, Loyola Press). She helps others create space to connect faith and everyday life through facilitating retreats and days of reflection, through writing, and through spiritual direction. With nearly twenty years of ministry experience within the Catholic Church, Becky seeks to help others discover God at work in the every day moments of people’s lives by utilizing St. Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises and the many gifts that our Catholic faith and Ignatian Spirituality provide.

Becky, I LOVE this book–Tra and I have been working on it for a couple of years now…it’s something you have to digest a little bit at a time, and indeed a deep well.
