Litany of the Way: Prayer for the Journey

August 5, 2010

Yesterday, as I was helping a friend come up with a prayer service for her retreat, I came across this Litany of the Way from the Catholic Household Blessing and Prayers.

As Jesus sought the quiet of the desert, teach us to pray.
As Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, teach us to love.
As Jesus promised paradise to the thief on the cross, teach us to hope.
As Jesus called Peter to walk to him across the water, teach us to believe.
As the child Jesus sat among the elders in the temple, teach us to seek answers.
As Jesus in the garden opened his mind and heart to God’s will, teach us to listen.
As Jesus reflected on the Law and the prophets, teach us to learn.
As Jesus used parables to reveal the mysteries of the Kingdom, teach us to teach
Which of the above lines strikes me the most?
What area(s) in my life do I need to apply the wisdom of this prayer?

This is an amazing litany/prayer Becky, thank you for sharing! I think the hardest line for me is the one about Peter walking on water and teaching us to believe. I find total faith in God to be very challenging. The second hardest one is about washing the feet of the disciples and teach us to love, because I have never been able to completely understand or act on the idea of unconditional love for others. This is a great prayer to remind me of Jesus’ example and the desire and ability to ask for help following in his footsteps.
