Several years ago I attended a day of reflection led by Sr. Lucy. She told a story about a woman who had been affected by Hurricane Katrina. The woman had come to her distressed that she was having trouble praying because she was so tired, angry, and sad. Sr. Lucy asked her what her prayer life had been like. The woman responded, “All I can imagine during prayer is me sitting on a boat with Jesus and Jesus holding me. I feel like I cannot talk and do not know what to say.” In awe, Sr. Lucy told her, “what an incredible prayer you are praying! A prayer of surrender, but also of resting in God.”
Don’t we all have days when we are tired, overwhelmed, exhausted, saddened or confused? It is on days like that when we can benefit from this woman’s beautiful prayer of simply resting in God and letting God’s love surround us and fill us.
Do we need to rest in God?
