Where’s God?

January 3, 2010

We sat down this morning in the pew at church, and Brady suddenly asked, “Where’s God?”.  Chris and I, along with several others around us, where rather stunned by the question.  I saw a few smiles and heard a few laughs.  One man answered, “he’s not here.”  I did not have any time to answer or respond because the music started and mass began.

No offense to the man in front of us, but I do believe his answer was wrong.  The answer I wanted to give Brady and the answer I believe in is, “He’s right here, kiddo!”.  He’s here right in front of you…in you, in me, in Daddy, in Abby, and in all the people gathered around us in this church.  I wanted to tell him that God is in this beautiful, sunny day. I wanted to tell him that God is “every where you look”…in your friends, in your grandparents, in your aunts and uncles, and in your cousins.  He is in the people you admire and look up to like your buddy, Robbie.

It is only now as I am reflecting back on this moment that I realize I never responded to Brady’s question. I am left pondering:  How do I relay this answer to my almost three year old son?

So, for all of us, how would you answer the question of “Where’s God?” if someone posed it to you?

What an exciting question! I think I’d say that God is right where he always is waiting for you to join Him in His work. What a wonder to consider that he is all things!

If Fr. Tom was responding to Brady’s question, who was saying Mass? Tell that guy to get to work!
